Biggie Stardust
The Notorious Rise and Fall of Biggie Stardust and the Samples from Mars is a mashup album by producer Phantom Reckless that combines various a cappella versions of songs by The Notorious B.I.G. with samples from various songs from different studio albums in the catalogue of David Bowie. The album consists of eight tracks and an interlude. The interlude features a fictional conversation wherein Biggie and Bowie discuss various aspects of their collaboration. This conversation was culled and edited from various recorded individual interviews of both artists.
It was inspired in part by Danger Mouse's The Grey Album and, like that album, is a deconstruction, using exclusively Bowie Samples alone to create each instrumental. The samples used came from 47 different David Bowie songs across 18 different albums, with release dates spanning from 1969 to 2016. Each track contains both larger samples, which act as hooks, main riffs, or choruses, and smaller samples used for things such as kick drums and snares. It was created as an homage to both David Bowie and The Notorious B.I.G., as well as a love letter to reinvention and repurposing, sampling and deconstruction.
